Truth Social’s promotional images signaled the ambition of this new social network. In a fictitious discussion, two users share: “Don’t you remember what it was like on the net in the beginning?” Remember the freedom of speech? », evokes the most experienced of them. “Freedom of speech? What is it?” answers the beginner.
Launched on February 21, 2022, this platform created by Donald Trump presented itself as an oasis for its supporters, banished from Twitter or Facebook, censored or thrown out of the networks of internet giants. Six weeks later, the future of Truth Social is uncertain. On Monday, April 4, Chief Technology Officer Josh Adams and Product Development Chief Billy Boozer resigned their positions. Technical problems have plagued the app from the start, and thousands of users are still waiting to use it.

Truth Social’s first steps are reminiscent of other similar unfortunate adventures of the former U.S. president, such as Trump University or his bankrupt casino in Atlantic City. Permanently banned by Twitter after encouraging an attack on the Capitol in January 2021, Donald Trump was looking for a new communication tool. The result is a platform that bears a striking resemblance to Twitter, the businessman’s favorite social network. The app is free, but currently only available on the iPhone and only for people living in the United States.
Just one post from Trump
The platform will not withstand the shock even for this relatively small audience. On the day of the launch itself, thirteen hours were unavailable due to technical deficiencies, and there were 300,000 people on the waiting list. Since then, some users are still waiting to register. Most are discouraged. According to statistics firm Sensor Tower, Truth Social now has more than a million users, which is low on the U.S. scale, and no more than 20,000 new subscribers a day during the month of March. Not even Donald Trump understood, his only publication dates back to the day of the launch. “Prepare! Your favorite president will be seen soon! », he announced. There has been silence ever since.
In this situation, the application is far from competing with other American conservative social networks, which claim to be defenders of freedom of expression. Like Parler, which currently has more than 10 million users and has managed to reach an international audience, and among the members is former MP Marion Maréchal. Ou Gab, with several million users and which since 2016 is considered a reference for Internet users on the conservative right.
The two social networks have already banned Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store download platforms at least once. One thing is for sure, Donald Trump did not achieve the expected success with Truth Social, but at least he will benefit from it: the magazine Forbes he estimates that the operation has already earned him 430 million dollars (393 million euros).
