Home Schooling

stress for homeschooled children

Some children who were previously educated at home are starting school for the first time this year. Back to school stressful for kids and parents alike.

We are very stressed Annabelle says we hope they integrate and quickly understand how the school works “. For this large family with seven children, until now accustomed to school at home, returning to school is difficult.

This Tuesday, August 30, 2022, Marie, Enguerrand and Victor discovered their school in Caen (Calvados) for the first time. Entering a small kindergarten was difficult, especially for the youngest, who was separated from her mother for the first time.

His big brother Victor, 7, returned to CE1 with a lump in his stomach. His parents had already tried twice in the past to send him to school. Two attempts that failed. So until now he was educated at home.

Only one of the siblings had a smile today. Enguerrand, in a hurry to find friends and discover the playground. He made his return to the big section with great enthusiasm, but his parents are worried because he is an extremely energetic 5-year-old boy.

Victor manages to obey and make friends, he behaves “normally”, but Enguerrand does not hold back. Teachers can have a lot of trouble guiding him,” worries her mother Annabelle.

In the coming weeks, this mother knows that she must pay special attention to the integration of her children. “This year I didn’t have to prepare programs once Returning to school required much more psychological preparation.” she said. “I took the time to explain to the children what is being done or not being done at school. You have to pay attention to them in the coming weeks as well.”

She and her husband carefully prepared this return to school. The couple chose a private school. During the meeting with the principal, she assured them that the teachers are open to new pedagogies and that the teaching is adapted to each child according to his or her particularities.

Although Annabelle decided to send her children to school this year to free up time to pursue a professional career, this mother still wants the freedom to continue homeschooling, which is now in jeopardy. “For children who do not fit in, for whom school does not work, homeschooling is essential. Sometimes it’s a real spare wheel“, she said.

However, from this beginning of the 2022 school year, you will have to meet certain conditions in order to educate your children at home. The law of August 24, 2021 “consolidating respect for the principles of the republic” now requires parents to obtain permission from the state. Only six reasons are valid:

  • Illness or disability
  • Intensive performance of artistic or sports activities
  • Family homelessness in France
  • Home away from any public school
  • The characteristics of the child require a specific educational project
  • A child victim of bullying at his school

Annabelle defends it: homeschooling is sometimes necessary. “One of our older daughters was in the front and had a school phobia.” she testifies “The school was therefore a real source of suffering, it is a particularly difficult environment for hypersensitive children”. Homeschooling gave the young girl a bit of a break to recuperate emotionally.

Annabelle is convinced of that,”children must learn by living, not by sitting on a chair”.
