Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of National Education, Youth and Sports, Roxana Maracineanu, Minister of Sports, Véronique Moreira, President of the USEP, Olivier Girault, Director of the UNSS and Eloi Relange, President of the French Chess Federation (FFE) welcome the signing of the new agreements on Tuesday 15 March 2022, which emphasize the sport of the mind, which is the practice of chess.
The framework agreement signed in 2007 with the FFE is now strengthened with the signing of the launch of Class’Echecs and the FFE will also sign a joint agreement with two public school sports federations, the USEP and the UNSS.
With 5 million practitioners in France, chess is indeed one of those historic disciplines that has seen a resurgence in recent years. The explosion of online prison practice in 2020, along with the broadcast of Le Jeu de la Dame on Netflix, had an immediate impact on the number of licensees.
In December 2021, FFE registered 42,000 registrants, which is a record for this period. The discovery or rediscovery of the game of chess has turned into a sporting practice in clubs. The performances of the French team at the international level also contributed to the enthusiasm of the general public.
The introduction of the game of chess in school has a special response among the educational aids presented on the occasion of the Week of Mathematics, which takes place from 7 to 14 March 2022 on the theme “Mathematics in shape(s)”, as this game has become an educational tool for young people.
By mobilizing logic, strategy, rigor and the ability to abstract, while facilitating the learning of citizenship through respect for rules and others, the game of chess falls within the recommendations of the TOROSSIAN-VILLANI report and is part of a mathematical strategy.
Practiced from an early age, it contributes to personality building by promoting attention, imagination, foresight, judgment and self-confidence. It also finds its full place in the context of school sports in that it represents an element of culture that has an educational, social and public health function and carries the values of equal opportunities. In addition, the renewed partnership mainly concerns pupils in priority educational networks and in the field who encounter difficulties in school, especially in the field of mathematics.
With the aim of introducing 250,000 primary school children over 3 years, the Class’Echecs program takes a new step. School teachers who voluntarily sign up to the program will have access to free education on the [email protected]ère platform, and at the same time, 5000 chessboards will be distributed to 500 schools from the first year of the partnership.
The free system is made possible by the financial and material support provided by Crédit Mutuel Enseignant and Échiquier de la Réussite. USEP will ensure practical continuity by organizing interclass and interschool meetings. The research lab will study the impact on classrooms from the first grade.
The acquisition of a public service delegation will also provide the FFE with concrete means to strengthen its activities on the two main axes of every sports federation:
- sports performance with the federal performance project: a performance plan for the French teams of today and tomorrow;
- social performance through the implementation of the FFE National Strategy, which includes the fight against violence in sport, health in sport, inclusion, disability, international impact…
Resources provided by the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Agency will be financial, human and material for top athletes.
The activities carried out under this agreement must be monitored jointly by MENJS and representatives of the signatory federations.
